Hiring art department in Detroit

What does it cost to hire a production designer in Detroit?

A production designer works out around $800 for a 10 hour non-union day in Detroit, and a set decorator around $550. Those are WUD’s planning baselines rather than quotes, and they are labour only — the build, the dressing and the props are a separate budget.

Does the rate include the set dressing budget?

No. Art department rates are labour. Dressing, props, builds, rentals and returns are a separate line, and a designer will normally scope it with you once they have read the script and seen the locations.

When do they get paid?

The producer funds the whole engagement when the booking is signed. 30% reaches the crew member as a deposit straight away and the balance goes out once you confirm wrap, both through Stripe. WUD charges 3%, and only when a booking is paid.

Do I need prep days as well as shoot days?

Almost always. Art department works ahead of the shoot — sourcing, building and dressing — and strikes afterwards. Post the prep and strike days on the crew call alongside the shoot days so the rate you agree covers the real commitment.
